Awards and Scholarships

The Department of Architecture is proud to announce many scholarship opportunities for our students. Please see each category below for specific instructions on how to apply for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Foundation Scholarships

All Foundation scholarships are internal to KSU students only.

  • Lance Linscott Scholarship  

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • 3rd year Architecture students
    • High academic achievement
    • Financial need (FAFSA Form)

    Amount*: $1,500

    Jimmy Goldgeier Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Applicants currently in their 3rd or 4th year (4th or 5th year at the time of award)
    • Full-time student
    • Preference given to transfer students
    • 70th - 90th percentile in the Architecture Program- the 90th percentile maximum will not apply to applicants seeking to renew the scholarship

    Application Requirements:

    • List of achievements
    • Answer application questions
    • An essay of 500 word count max

    This award is renewable until graduation for full-time students. 

    The Goldgeiers will be holding an informational meeting on February 13, 2017 at noon in the PIT for all students interested in applying for this scholarship.

    James G. Fausett Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria: 

    • Applicants currently in their 4th year (5th year student at the time of award)
    • Demonstration of leadership and commendable academic performance
    • Being in the 85th or higher percentile in the program

    This award cannot be received more than once.

    Jeremy Smith Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Applicants currently in their 3rd or 4th year (5th year student at the time of award)

    Application Requirements:

    • Portfolio/Creative work: Exemplary design work and demonstration of skills in multiple medias (models, drawings and digital)
    • List of Activities: leadership, engagement and volunteering
    • Reference: Two in support of "Activities" category
    • Presentation: who you are, one exemplary design project and examples of engagement

    Evaluation:

    • 70% Studio Work
    • 30% Engagement Activities

  • Applications for any of the above Foundation scholarships must be submitted through the KSU Scholarship system. Failing to do both (submitting to only one location) will disqualify applications. 

AIA Scholarships

  • The John D. Mulford Memorial Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Open to KSU Architecture students only
    • Applicants in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year
    • Professional degree candidates at KSU who will be continuing their studies in the following year

    Application Requirements:

    • Essay of 1,000 word count max. of goals, academic performance, leadership and community involvement
    • Design portfolio
    • List of awards and scholarships earned and applied for
    • Demonstrated financial need

    Amount*: $1,000 - $1,250

    Dorothy P. Spence Memorial Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Open to all students in Georgia
    • Applicants in their 3rd or 4th year (4th or 5th year at the time of award)
    • Financial need
    • Academic performance and portfolio review

    Application Requirements

    • Essay of 1,000 word count max. of goals, academic performance, leadership and community involvement
    • Design portfolio
    • List of awards and scholarships earned and applied
    • Demonstrated financial need

     AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate Program

    • Submitted by the scholarship committee
    • An engraved medal and certificate of merit will be presented to the top-ranking graduating student in each architecture program
    • A certificate of merit will be presented to the second-ranking graduating student
    • Awarded for general excellence in architecture throughout the four-year course to graduating students of architecture schools

  • All applications for any of the above AIA scholarships must be submitted to the KSU Department of Architecture Scholarship committee by the deadline listed on the specific scholarship above. The committee will submit the shortlist to AIA.

External Scholarship Opportunities

  • Gensler Diversity Scholarship

    • Open to students nationwide
    • Academic scholarships and paid summer internships in a Gensler regional office
    • Gensler invites each school to select two students as candidates to national selection 

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • 4th year at the time of application (5th year at the time of award)
    • Must be African American
    • Academic excellence, design ability and presentation creativity
    • Cannot be received more than once

    Application Requirements:

    • Complete the online application form
    • Digital application materials in a single PDF file (7MB maximum):
    • Resume
    • Letter of nomination from Dean or Chair of academic program
    • One advanced-level commercial architecture project with written description (500 words and 10 pages, maximum)-- work done with a single partner may be submitted, but must include a description of the applicant’s specific contribution and a letter of support from the applicant’s collaborative partner

    King Student Medal For Excellence in Architectural + Environmental Research by ARCC (Architectural Research Centers Consortium)

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Recognition of innovation, integrity and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research
    • The nominee must have been enrolled at the institution for at least one semester (or quarter) during the current or previous academic year (i.e., the award is to be for "current" work)

    Professional Women in Building Scholarship 

    Eligibility Criteria: 

    • Category A: College Students or Entering College Freshmen (children)
        • Applicant must be registered as a full-time student in good standing (a GPA of 2.5 for all courses) this upcoming fall with one full academic year of course work after the scholarship is received at a two or fouryear college, university or vocational program or be a senior in high s-chool enrolled in a college, university or vocational program following graduation
        • Essay — 500 words or less as to how the scholarship monies will be used
        • Preference given to Building Industry related professions
        • Consideration will be given to financial need, career goals, academic achievement, employment history, extra curricular activities and letters of recommendation
    • Category B - PWB Member for continuing education or towards graduate or undergraduate programs in specific curriculums
      • Essay — 500 words or less as to how the scholarship monies will be used
      • Preference given to Building Industry related professions
      • Consideration will be given to financial need, career goals, academic achievement, employment history, extra curricular activities and letters of recommendation

    ProNet David W. Lakamp AIA Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Announced to 4th yearr students in a NAAB accredited degree program
    • Strong interest in practice or risk management for architects and engineers
    • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

    Submission Requirements:

    • Completed application including the 300-word case study essay and 200-word biography; (2017 Case Study Topic: Collaboration in Practice)
    • A transcript from each academic institution attended since high school; minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0
    • Two letters of recommendation addressed to the Scholarship Jury, one of which is from a department faculty member verifying applicant eligibility. Each recommendation should highlight three areas that articulate an applicant’s advantages or areas of excellence with practice and risk management

    Vectorworks Scholarship

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Enrolled in undergraduate at an accredited college or university
    • Eligible if you will graduate from a design-based program in 2017
    • All years are eligible
    • Group can enter well

    Tom Cory Scholarship by American Precast Association

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • 3rd or 4th year
    • Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. Must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. during scholarship period
    • Must continue education in pursuit of an architectural degree
    • Must have at least two semesters of school left to complete from date of award
    • Both Undergraduate and Graduate levels are acceptable.

    Application Requirements:

    • A transcript of two years college through the last grading period prior to the date of application
    • A typed description of your career plans after graduation
    • A typed essay (essay 1) explaining why you chose this career
    • A typed essay (essay 2) of 300 – 500 words on a topic of your choice related to the precast concrete industry
    • A letter of recommendation from a faculty member of your College or University
    • Must be involved in activities related to the architectural field

    Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship  

    Three major fellowships are awarded:

    • One of up to $20,000 in any field of music
    • One of up to $20,000 in architectural design and history, art and design, dance, instrumental or vocal music, or theatre
    • One of up to $9,000 in architecture, art, dance, landscape architecture, theatre, or urban and regional planning

    Eligibility

    • High attainment in the applicant's major field of study as evidenced by academic marks and quality of work submitted or performed
    • High attainment in related cultural fields as evidenced by academic marks
    • The character, merit, and suitability of the program proposed by the applicant
    • Excellence of personality, seriousness of purpose, and good moral character

    Georgia CEFPI Scholarship

    Eligibility:

    • Announced to 4th year students (5th year student at the time of award)
    • Students in Architecture or related fields

    Criteria:

    • Academic performance: 50%
    • Quality of essay on future plans and scholarship interest: 25%
    • Recommendation of faculty advisor: 10%
    • Extracurricular activities: 15%

    SOM Prize and Travel Fellowship Awards in Architecture, Design & Urban Design

    The SOM Prize is a $50,000 research and travel fellowship that enables one outstanding applicant the opportunity to travel in connection with carrying out in-depth research on a subject of their choosing; to meet with other professionals in the field; and to pursue study outside the realm of established patterns.

    A second award, the $20,000 SOM Travel Fellowship, offers an applicant the opportunity to expand their professional education beyond the classroom through the observation of buildings, design, culture and history that can only be achieved through travel.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Applicants who have received or plan to receive an undergraduate or graduate degree from a U.S. school with an accredited degree program in either Architecture, Design or Urban Design
    • Applicants for the 2017 awards must receive their degree between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
    • U.S. Citizenship is not required

    Point Foundation: The National LGBT Scholarship Fund

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • A proven track record of leadership and community involvement
    • Strong academic achievement
    • Working for the betterment of the LGBTQ community
    • Financial need
    • Open to all regardless of citizenship
    • All years can apply

  • Interested applicants for all external scholarship opportunities listed above (except Gensler) must submit applications individually. The KSU Department of Architecture Scholarship committee can support applications as consultants for application packages.
