                        "Jan" Nijman (Georgia State University) is the second Keynote speaker in the "Year of India: Envisioning the Future and Understanding the Realities of India's Urban Ecologies" lecture series.

                        • Jan Nijman is the founding director of the Urban Studies Institute and Distinguished University Professor, Geosciences, at Georgia State University.

                          A native of the Netherlands, Nijman received his M.A. degree in geography from the University of Amsterdam, and his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before joining GSU, he spearheaded urban research and teaching programs at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Miami. He presently holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam.

                          His primary research interests are in urban theory, urban and regional development, and global comparative urban studies, with regional expertise and extensive field work experience in North America, West Europe and South Asia.

                          His work has been funded by various agencies, including the National Science Foundation, Association of American Geographers, National Geographic Society, Guggenheim Foundation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Dutch National Science Foundation.

                          Anuradha Mathur (University of Pennsylvania) and Dilip da Cunha (Harvard University) are the first Keynote speakers in the "Year of India: Envisioning the Future and Understanding the Realities of India's Urban Ecologies" lecture series. View flyer

                          • Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha work between Philadelphia and Bangalore.

                            They are authors of Mississippi Floods: Designing a Shifting Landscape (2001), Deccan Traverses: the Making of Bangalore’s Terrain (2006) and Soak: Mumbai in an Estuary (2009), and co-editors of Design in the Terrain of Water (2014). Da Cunha’s new book The Invention of Rivers: Alexander’s Eye and Ganga’s Descent is forthcoming from University of Pennsylvania Press in 2018.

                            Mathur and da Cunha have received many awards and are regularly invited to present their work and ideas in academic and professional forums internationally. Most recently they were recipients of a 2017 Pew Fellowship Grant.

                            Anuradha Mathur, an architect and landscape architect, is Professor in the Landscape Architecture Department at the University of Pennsylvania.

                            Dilip da Cunha, an architect and planner, teaches at Harvard University, Columbia University, and at Srishti School of Art, Design, and Technology in Bangalore.

                            • Robert Arnett, a native of Columbus, Georgia, has had an avid interest in India for over 35 years. He is the author and photographer of the internationally acclaimed book India Unveiled: Spirit,Tradition, People that has won 4 national book awards. He is also the author of a children’s book set in India, Finders Keepers?, that has won 5 national book awards.

                              Arnett has lectured widely throughout North America, including The Smithsonian Institute, The Kennedy Center, Harvard, Yale, and Stanford Universities. He was a speaker at the Parliament of the World’s Religions held in Cape Town, South Africa. He has also given numerous presentations at schools, libraries, community organizations, temples, and churches. His corporate presentations include AT&T, US Department of Agriculture, Delta Airlines, British Petroleum, and General Electric Corporation.

                              He has been interviewed on National Public Radio, Voice of America, South African Broadcasting Corporation, and various television programs.
